This resource will make you familiar with how the big sized ‘Ice plates’ are manufactured. This ice making process involving heat transfer/extraction from water with the help of basic refrigeration techniques. This ice plant uses ‘brine’ and ‘Ammonia’ as refrigerants, working medium alternatively.
The function of an ice plant or ice factory is to make or form ice in large quantity and in large size. The only difference lies in the ice making the stage. In the freezer compartment, the tray with water when it comes in contact with very low temperature environment, because ice but in an ice plant which is a hung commercial factory, it uses separate ice making or ice freezing circuit. The cold is produced in one circuit and it is transferred to the water can by another circuit.
Ammonia: It is the primary refrigerant which takes heat from brine. This ammonia changes phase while moving in the circuit
Brine: It is the secondary refrigerant which takes heat from the water and produces ice.
There are three main circuits of working medium in ice plant:
➢ Refrigeration circuit: Ammonia as working medium which actually produces the cold by changes its phase at different location.
➢ Cooling water circuit: Cooling water as working medium to remove the heat of condenser.
➢ Brine circuit: Brine solution as working medium which transfers the cold from ammonia to water filled cans where ice is to be formed.
Slurry-ice is a unique chilling medium and is formed out of seawater. The microscopic crystals form a suspension in seawater in any required concentration
♦ Slurry-ice completely covers the fish, chilling the fish instantly and the greater chilling characteristics of up to 15 to 20 times better than that of conventional block ice.
♦ chilling the catch as rapid as possible and keeping the fish at -1ºC to -10ºC as long as possible.
♦ as the ice crystal leave the fish in a soft bed, this kind of slurry-ice does not damage the fish.
♦ can be pumped at a concentration from 20% to 50% and easy to distribute and handle which increases productivity and flexibility.
♦ This machine can also be used as high efficient sea water cooler.
1.Large contact area
As its flat and thin shape, it has got the largest contact area among all types of ice. The larger its contact area is, the faster it cools other stuff. In comparison with 1 ton of cube ice, 1 ton of flake ice has 1799 sq.m of contact area while 1 ton of cube ice only has 1383 sqm, therefore the flake ice has got much better cooling effects than cube ice.
2. Low cost of producing
the producing of flake ice is very economical, it only requires 1.3RT refrigerating effect to make 1 ton of ice from 16C water.
3. Perfect in food cooling
Flake ice is type of dry and crispy ice, it hardly forms any shape edges, in food cooling process, this nature has made it the best material for cooling, it can reduce the possibility of damage to food to the lowest rate.
4. Thoroughly mixing
Flake ice can become water quickly through the rapid heat exchanging with products, and also supply the moisture for products to be cooled.
